Sculpture no. 17 stands inside the library at St. Svithun School, in the Storhaug neighbourhood. Here the rusty man keeps an eye on all the library’s activities. From the schoolyard, he can be glimpsed standing by a window, one floor up from the ground floor, to the left of the building’s main entrance.
The school was renovated during 2005–2007. Before this, the room that is now the library was classroom 9 C, and although the rusty man was enjoyed by teachers and pupils alike, he was also sometimes in the way.
St. Svithun School has long traditions. It was designed by the city architect Johs. Th. Westby and built during 1918–1919. In 1966, a programme of 9 years of basic education for all pupils was introduced in Stavanger, and St. Svithun gradually shifted from being a secondary-level school to an intermediate-level school for the Storhaug neighbourhood and nearby island communities. In 1969, 9-year compulsory education was introduced nationwide.
For many years, the swimming pool at St. Svithun was the only one in Stavanger. Many of the city’s older citizens took their first swimming strokes here.

Skulptur nummer 17 står inne i biblioteket på St. Svithun ungdomsskole, i Storhaug bydel. Her holder den rustne mannen øye med bibliotekets aktiviteter. Skulpturen kan skimtes ute fra skolegården, gjennom et vindu i andre etasje, til venstre for hovedinngangen.
Skolen ble renovert i 2005 – 2007. Før var det klasserom der biblioteket nå er. Da hadde den rustne mannen fast plass sammen med vindusrekken i klasse 9 C, til både glede og bry for elever og lærere.
St. Svithun skole har lange tradisjoner. Skolen ble bygget i årene 1918 – 1919, tegnet og oppført av byarkitekt Johs Th. Westby. Opprinnelig var navnet 'Stavanger kommunale middelskole'. I 1966 ble den 9-årige grunnskolen innført i Stavanger og St.Svithun gikk gradvis over fra å være realskole og gymnas til å bli ungdomsskole for Storhaug bydel og byøyene. På landsbasis ble den niårige grunnskolen innført i 1969 og ga en grunnleggende nasjonal rett til 9 års skolegang.
I mange år var svømmebassenget på St. Svithun det eneste i Stavanger. Mange av byens voksne og eldre innbyggere tok sine første svømmetak i dette bassenget.
